Quiney scores ton for Vics against SA

Opening batsman Rob Quiney and Peter Handscomb scored centuries as Victoria moved to 3-252 against South Australia at tea on day one of the Sheffield Shield match in Adelaide.

But a bleak summer with the bat continued for Victorian skipper Cameron White, who made just three.

White, who was dumped as Australia’s Twenty20 captain, failed after watching Quiney and Handscomb put on 225 runs for the second wicket on Thursday at Adelaide Oval.

Quiney made 114 while Handscomb was unbeaten at tea on 112 with Andrew McDonald not out 12.

Quiney and Handscomb, who was dropped on 11 and 15 en route to his maiden first-class ton, dominated SA’s bowlers after opener Chris Rogers fell for a duck to Joe Mennie’s opening over of the match.

Quiney was particularly aggressive, striking three sixes and 14 fours in his 145-ball innings, until caught behind from the part-time spin bowling of Tom Cooper (1-41).

White then lasted just a dozen balls before edging to Redbacks skipper Michael Klinger at first slip from Jake Haberfield’s bowling.
