SA batsman hit by car outside pub

South Australian batsman Travis Head has been hit by a car outside an Adelaide hotel while celebrating the Redbacks’ Sheffield Shield win against Victoria.

He suffered head and back injuries and spent the night in hospital.

The 19-year-old was released from hospital early on Monday, with SA officials relieved he was not seriously injured.

Head played a key role with the bat in SA’s tense one-wicket win over Victoria at Adelaide on Sunday, scoring 35 in the run chase.

He was with teammates celebrating the victory when struck by a car outside a North Adelaide hotel, SA Cricket Association chief executive Keith Bradshaw said.

“Ambulance officers were called to the scene and Travis was taken to hospital for treatment,” Bradshaw said on Monday.

“He has stitches in his head and back but was released from hospital this morning and is expected to make a full recovery.

“I have spoken to Travis this morning.

“Ambulance officers attending the scene told him that the fact he was under the legal limit (for alcohol) may well have saved his life.

“We are extremely relieved that he did not sustain further injuries and is now at home with his family.”

Head, who has played 11 first-class games, is rated the most promising young batsman in SA.

Last week, Head was named player of the under-19 national championships for the second consecutive year.
