Perth Scorchers players might have to tone down their welcome party for Pakistan paceman Yasir Arafat after the team was fined for a slow over rate.
Each player who featured in last week’s three-wicket loss to Brisbane Heat have been fined $250 after the team was deemed to be one over behind the required rate.
Skipper Simon Katich will be banned for one match if the Scorchers re-offend this summer.
Arafat, who has played three Tests, 11 ODIs and 13 T20s for Pakistan, arrived in Perth on Monday after earning a late call-up to the Scorchers.
The 31-year-old replaces West Indies opener Dwayne Smith, who is set to miss the whole tournament due to personal reasons.
Arafat could make his Scorchers debut as early as Thursday night’s clash with the Melbourne Renegades at the WACA.
The right-arm seamer played alongside fellow Scorchers paceman Alfonso Thomas at English county side Somerset this year.
“Yasir is a very skilled cricketer and offers something similar to what Alfonso Thomas brings,” Scorchers coach Justin Langer said.
“What we’ve found in the history of Twenty20 cricket is that bowlers who are able to execute their skills under pressure and bowl at the death are usually the first players selected.
“Having Alfonso and Yasir Arafat in the team to be able to execute those skills will be a huge bonus for us.”
