Moises Henriques scored a stylish 55 as the Sydney Sixers set the Melbourne Renegades a target of 152 to win Saturday night’s BBL match at Etihad Stadium.
Henriques came to the crease at 1-6 but proved a steadying influence, hitting seven fours and one six off 39 deliveries in his side’s 6-151.
The big right-hander shared 46-run partnerships with Michael Lumb (18) and Steve Smith (25) after the Nic Maddinson (three) was stumped off Aaron O’Brien’s bowling in the second over.
Stars skipper Smith was caught and bowled by O’Brien (2-41) in the 13th over in a key breakthrough but Henriques was powering on strongly at the other end, reaching his half-century off 36 deliveries in the following over.
Peter Nevill produced his second smart stumping of the innings to remove Henriques for 55 as Sri Lankan spin wizard Muttiah Muralitharan struck at 4-109.
Muralitharan claimed 1-23 and was most unlucky to have a leg-before appeal against Jordan Silk turned down in his fourth over.
Silk played a ball from Dwayne Bravo onto his stumps in the 19th over but the bails didn’t dislodge, much to the West Indies’ allrounder’s dismay.
Bravo (1-23) got his man though, bowling Silk for 10 three balls later. Dan Smith was lbw to Nathan Rimmington (2-35) for a golden duck two balls into the final over but Marcus North remained unbeaten on 30 off 21 balls in a handy contribution.
Bravo, who has been recruited for a two-game stint, appeared to roll his ankle when chasing a ball to long on in the third over and briefly left the field for treatment.
The seventh-placed Renegades 2-4) are battling to stay in semi-final contention while the third-placed Sixers (4-2) are eyeing off a possible home semi-final.
