Australian batsman Steve Smith hopes some strong performances against England in the final two one-dayers will boost his chances of securing a spot for the 2015 World Cup.

Smith hasn’t featured in Australia’s ODI team since January 13 last year.

But the 24-year-old was called into the squad earlier this week after selectors decided to rest opener David Warner for Friday’s clash with England at the WACA and Sunday’s match in Adelaide.

Smith played an important role in Australia’s 5-0 Ashes whitewash earlier this summer, and now he hopes to inflict more pain on England in the one-day series.

And with the 50-over World Cup less than 13 months away, Smith knows he can’t afford to let any opportunities slip through his fingers.

“The World Cup is obviously still a fair way away, but every opportunity you get, you’ve got to try and impress,” Smith said on Wednesday.

“I haven’t played for a while now so hopefully I can come out and make an impact and hopefully win a couple of games for Australia.

“I guess you’re always disappointed when you’re left out.

“But obviously the one-day team has been doing very well.

“It’s quite a hard team to get into. Now that I’ve got an opportunity, hopefully I can make some claims.”

Smith has averaged just 21.1 in his 33 ODIs, but boosted his Test average to 36.4 after a solid Ashes series.
