Strikers can be The Unstoppables: Hughes

Australian cricket has had The Invincibles. And now, Phil Hughes reckons the Adelaide Strikers can become The Unstoppables.

The Strikers, who host Perth Scorchers in the Big Bash League’s New Year’s Eve fixture, believe they can beat every side in the Big Bash League.

“We know if we put it all together as a team, we can really be unstoppable in this competition,” Hughes told reporters on Monday.

The Strikers followed their opening game wash-out with a slim win against Sydney Thunder last Friday night.

Hughes believes Adelaide’s batting line-up, led by English big-hitter Alex Hales, Michael Klinger and Callum Ferguson, can become the envy of the league.

“We spoke about the depth that we have to maybe go a little bit more attacking earlier, because we know we have got that depth down the order,” Hughes said.

“That is a real good thing, to believe in each other.

“This year it seems like it’s clicking … we are really clicking as a unit.”

The Strikers also boast a canny bowling attack headed by pacemen Shaun Tait and Kane Richardson and captain Johan Botha.

But Hughes was wary of the threat posed by Perth’s spinners Michael Beer and Brad Hogg in Tuesday night’s Adelaide Oval encounter.

“Beer and Hogg just keep putting the numbers on the board … they are two that we have to watch,” he said of the Scorchers, who have a win and a loss so far.

“But the biggest thing is worrying about what we do. We know if we play well, we can beat anyone in this competition.”

And according to Perth opener Shaun Marsh, the Strikers’ confidence is justified.

“You look at their team, they’re very even across the board and have got some dangerous players with bat and ball … it’s going to be a good challenge for our guys,” Marsh told reporters on Monday.
