T20 rankings, past no concern for Bailey

Australia’s one-day side are ranked No.1, while the Test team recently completed a stunning series win over world No.1 South Africa.

Now, the nation’s Twenty20 outfit have a golden chance to make it an upswing across all three formats.

But as George Bailey’s men prepare their attempt to win a maiden T20 World Cup in Australia’s fifth attempt, the skipper says there is no added pressure.

“I don’t think about it,” said Bailey of the T20 World Cup being the only mountain Australia have yet to climb.

“I know we’d like to win it.

“It’s a World Cup and that’s important. But that’s not a pressure thing, it’s an exciting thing.”

Australia occupied No.6 on the ICC’s T20 rankings prior to their series win over South Africa.

Bailey noted this is an unfair reflection on the current squad, and that he was not overly worried about the table.

“We haven’t played our best Twenty20 side since the 2012 World Cup,” he said.

“A lot gets said about where we’re ranked, and I think that’s on the back of a lot of drawn series.

“I don’t know how the rankings work. I know they’re not important to us, because if they were we would be picking our best side for every series.

“Circumstances dictate that (T20) series are more often than not at the end of a Test tour or there’s a Test tour coming up, and you’ve got to give certain guys a bit of rest.”

Australian Shane Jurgensen, coach of host nation Bangladesh, suggested rankings would be meaningless at the T20 World Cup.

“Everyone’s got dangerous players – from Afghanistan to Australia,” Jurgensen said.

“One player can change everything in one over. The rankings obviously don’t mean anything.”

Australia’s T20 World Cup campaign starts with a fixture against Pakistan in Dhaka on Sunday.

Aaron Finch, who has starred in the Big Bash League but will be playing his first T20 World Cup, suggested he would not be feeling the weight of expectation.

“Anytime you’re representing Australia in a World Cup there’s huge pressure,” Finch said.

“But the fact Australia hasn’t won one yet, I don’t think that will be weighing anybody down.”
