Victoria’s batsmen crashed to 5-78 after 25 overs against South Australia in Tuesday’s crucial one-day match at Adelaide Oval.
After winning the toss and batting, the Bushrangers lost two wickets in left-arm paceman Gary Putland’s opening over, with Rob Quiney and Cameron White dismissed for ducks.
Fellow quick Joe Mennie then dismissed Andrew McDonald for seven before spinner Aaron O’Brien trapped Peter Handscomb lbw for four.
Fringe Australian batsman Aaron Finch’s attempted recovery mission ended when on 20, run out in a mix up with Ryan Carters, to leave the Victorians 5-35 in the 16th over.
But Carters (24 not out) and Will Sheridan (19 not out) have put on a handy partnership as the Victorians seek to post a respectable score.
The Redbacks will rise to top of the table with a triumph in the day-night fixture, while fourth-placed Victoria must win to remain a chance of making the final.
