Wade smashes ton for Vics v Tassie

Deposed Test gloveman Matthew Wade reminded national selectors of his abilities with an unbeaten century for Victoria in the Sheffield Shield clash with Tasmania at Bellerive.

Wade brought up his ton with a pull shot for six, also smacking 13 fours in his 186-ball 107, watched by selection panel chairman John Inverarity.

It helped the Vics to a formidable first-innings score of 6-339 after two rain-disrupted days.

The 25-year-old put on 104 with stubborn night watchman Scott Boland (51) who spent more than four hours in the middle for his 213-ball knock.

Tasmania’s bowlers shared the spoils, miserly spinner Xavier Doherty finishing with 2-42 from 26 overs.

But mystery surrounded the use of Test squad member James Faulkner (1-50), who bowled just 10 overs, most of them late in the day, after delivering seven on day one.

Wade had looked set for a long career as Australia’s next ‘keeper/batsman but was dropped after averaging 18.83 in the disastrous Indian series earlier this year.

Replaced by veteran Brad Haddin, he then appeared to slip behind Tasmania’s Tim Paine, who was picked for Australia A’s match against the touring English.

The Victorian skipper’s start to the Shield season had been patchy but he negotiated the tricky conditions in Hobart to post his seventh first-class century.

Another former Test batsman, Rob Quiney, was out for 82, his third half-century in as many Shield games this season.

Limited overs star Glenn Maxwell did little to enhance his red-ball reputation when he was trapped lbw for just five.

Boland blunted everything Tasmania threw at him and eventually reached his 50 from 211 balls.

He was out for his highest score two deliveries later, attempting to hit Doherty over mid-on, having previously faced just 253 balls in 12 innings.

Rain delayed the start of play until 1.15pm (AEDT) after two sessions had been lost on Wednesday.
