Dilshan comes to rescue for Sri Lanka

Tillakaratne Dilshan posted a timely century to restore some pride for Sri Lanka in their tour match against the Chairman’s XI in Canberra on Friday.

Chasing the Chairman’s XI’s monster score of 6(dec)-439, highlighted by opener Scott Henry’s unbeaten 207, Dilshan’s 101 not out dominated proceedings on day two of the three-day fixture as the visitors reached tea at 1-154.

He brought up three figures in the second-last over before the break when he nudged an Ashton Turner delivery to the on-side, and was clapped on by star batting partner Kumar Sangakkara (10 not out).

Showing the traits which have earned him 250 one-day caps for Sri Lanka, the former skipper smashed 15 boundaries in his 152-ball knock.

The 36-year-old took particular liking to the offspin of allrounder Glenn Maxwell, who headed to tea with figures of 0-25 off six overs.

Dilshan put on 105 for the opening wicket with youngster Dimuth Karunaratne, who has played just one Test and is touring as the back-up opener to Tharanga Paranavitana.

Karunaratne hit six boundaries in a patient knock of 40 before he was caught by Marcus Harris at mid-on off Turner (1-34).

Earlier, Henry brought up his double century with consecutive boundaries off Dhammika Prasad as the Chairman’s XI piled on 49 more runs in the morning session before the compulsory declaration after 100 overs, as per the rules of the three-day game.

Henry started the day 28 short of his milestone, but struck six boundaries to reach it in quick time after the resumption of play.

Prasad, who went for 0-101 on Thursday, struck two blows by removing Travis Head (35) and Sam Whiteman (4) to finish with 2-128, the only multiple wicket-taker for Sri Lanka.

Sri Lanka rested four of their big names, including captain-in-waiting Angelo Mathews, star spinner Rangana Herath and middle-order batsman Thilan Samaraweera.
