F1 has ‘heavy hearts’ after Hubert death

There will be a minute’s silence ahead of the Belgian Grand Prix in memory of French driver Anthoine Hubert, after his death on Saturday in a Formula 2 crash at the Spa-Francorchamps circuit.

Formula One organisers said on Sunday the silence would take place at 2:53pm, with the F1 race to start as scheduled at 3:10, with Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc on pole ahead of teammate Sebastian Vettel.

The organisers said they did not consider cancellation.

“Today we race,” the F1 Twitter account said. “We do so with the heaviest of hearts, and we carry the memory of Anthoine throughout.

“Just like it was for Anthoine, racing is our passion and our dream. It defines us.

“So today we race for Anthoine. And today, and always, we honour him.”

The 22-year-old Hubert was killed when his BWT Arden car rebounded back onto the track after hitting barriers after the Raidillon corner.

His car was struck at high speed by Sauber Junior Team driver Juan Manuel Correa.

He remains in intensive care. Correa’s team said he had surgery on “fractures to both of his legs and a minor spinal injury”. The 19-year-old American-Ecuadorian’s condition was described as “stable”.

There will also be a moment’s silence ahead of the day’s Formula 3 race in Spa while the F2 sprint race has been cancelled.
