Fulton in for Taylor in NZ cricket team

Five new Twenty20 caps and a recall for in-form batsman Peter Fulton in place of Ross Taylor highlight the New Zealand cricket squads named on Friday for the tour of South Africa.

Taylor’s 16 months in the job has come to an end, with Brendon McCullum leading the side in all three forms of the game during the December and January tour.

Taylor was invited to remain as Test skipper, but declined, and will instead take a break from international cricket.

Coach Mike Hesson says Fulton, who played the last of his 10 Tests for New Zealand two years ago, has earned a recall after a good start to the domestic season for Canterbury.

Uncapped left-arm spinner Bruce Martin won a call-up with Hesson saying legspinner Todd Astle would not be needed in South African conditions, while wicketkeeper Kruger van Wyk was dropped.

“Bruce Martin is a specialist spinner who can bowl a lot of overs, and he deserves an opportunity after showing good recent form,” he said.

“Following on from BJ Watling’s good form in Sri Lanka and again while back in New Zealand, he has been selected as the Test wicketkeeper.”

National selection manager Kim Littlejohn said South Africa presented a tough challenge at home, and the series would be an “exciting test” for a developing side looking to build on the recent Test win in Sri Lanka.

The Test team will be without veteran spinner Daniel Vettori, who is continuing his rehabilitation from injury and unavailable for selection, while Dean Brownlie is preferred to Rob Nicol.

Tim Southee and Jacob Oram weren’t considered for T20 selection due to the pending birth of their children while Andrew Ellis was ruled out with a side strain.

Hesson said the T20 squad had an exciting blend of experience and young talented players.

“Corey Anderson, Jimmy Neesham, Colin Munro, Derek de Boorder and Mitchell McClenaghan are in good form and have shown considerable promise. They deserve their chance to impress at a higher level.”
