Hamilton wins Canada GP, Vettel penalised

Lewis Hamilton has given Mercedes a seventh straight win with victory at the Canadian Grand Prix after Ferrari’s Sebastian Vettel was slapped with a five-second penalty.

It was a fifth win of the season for the Briton, and the 78th of his career on Sunday with the five-time world champion also moving level with Michael Schumacher on a record seven victories in Canada.

Vettel’s Ferrari teammate Charles Leclerc was third, Hamilton’s Mercedes teammate Valtteri Bottas was fourth and Red Bull’s Max Verstappen was fifth.

Australian driver Daniel Ricciardo finished sixth for Renault, his best result this season.

Vettel, who led from pole, was punished after coming back from the grass in front of Hamilton while under pressure in a manoeuvre regarded as dangerous by stewards.

Although the German crossed the finish line first, Hamilton just behind him was victorious.
