Sri Lanka close innings at 6-396

Sri Lanka’s preparations for their three-Test series with Australia wrapped up in Canberra on Saturday, with the tourists enjoying more batting practice on the mild Manuka Oval deck before play finished two sessions early.

Prasanna Jayawardene (71) and rising star Dinesh Chandimal (57) enjoyed a 110-run fifth-wicket partnership, and added 92 in brisk fashion in the morning session before both fell in quick succession.

The tourists closed their innings at 6-396, still 43 runs behind the Chairman’s XI’s first innings total of 439.

Chandimal was the first to go, brilliantly caught by Glenn Maxwell at backward square leg while trying to flick Luke Butterworth through the on side.

Jayawardene lasted barely another over before he was bowled by teenage spinner Ashton Turner (2-93) while trying to charge down the wicket in search of a century.

Sri Lanka were 4-370 at the 100-over mark, normally the designated compulsory declaration, but both teams agreed to let the tourists to bat through until lunch when the match was ended by mutual agreement from both sides.

By comparison, the Chairman’s XI – led by opener Scott Henry’s exceptional unbeaten 207 – scored 6-439 from their 100 overs against a lacklustre Sri Lankan attack on a wicket that offered little for the quicks or spinners.

Turner was the only Chairman’s XI multiple wicket-taker while, for Sri Lanka, only Dhammika Prasad (2-128) achieved the same on an unforgiving wicket.

While Sri Lanka will be displeased with their bowling, they can’t find fault among their batsman with key trio Tillakaratne Dilshan (101 not out), Mahela Jayawardene (36) and Kumar Sangakkara (55) all spending time in the middle.

Sri Lanka will fly to Hobart on Sunday morning to continue preparations for Friday’s opening Test at Bellerive.
