Rugby sevens convert Trae Williams can stake his claim as the fastest man in the code after being named in Australia’s squad to play in Sydney this weekend.
The former sprinter was impressive in his Dubai debut late last year and has now earnt a home ground Olympic audition in what’s set to be 40-plus degree heat at Parramatta’s Bankwest Stadium on Saturday and Sunday.
Williams notched a personal best of 10.10 seconds over 100 metres in 2018 and was among a hot field of sprinters vying for a Tokyo berth before sensationally announcing his sporting switch later the following year.
His addition to the Australian squad sets up a mouth-watering clash with fellow speedsters Carlin Isles and Perry Baker on Sunday when the hosts meet the United States.
Isles was a college standout in both track and field and American football, while Baker was cut down by injury after signing with Philadelphia in the NFL.
Both men have helped the United States become a rugby sevens powerhouse and Australia hope Williams’ extra pace can be a weapon this weekend and later this year in Tokyo.
“Bringing Trae back into the starting squad adds a real point of difference,” coach Tim Walsh said.
“It is nice to have the fastest player in world rugby with ready to ignite their career on the sevens circuit.”
Former Wallabies flyer Luke Morohan has been added as 13th man, having joined the squad this week on release from club side Bristol as he chases a Tokyo berth.
Ben O’Donnell is the big absentee after suffering a knee injury in last weekend’s Hamilton Sevens, where Australia finished third.
The men will begin their campaign against Scotland and Japan on Saturday, with only the winner of the pool progressing to the semi-finals.
