Chalmers set to make Augusta golf run

Australian Open and PGA Champion Greg Chalmers has positioned himself for a run at Augusta National after the first round of the US PGA Farmers Insurance Open at Torrey Pines.

Chalmers shot an opening round seven-under-par 65 on the north course to be tied eighth, three shots behind American leaders Spencer Levin and Kyle Stanley.

His low round came courtesy of five birdies and a 50-foot bomb for eagle on the par-five 18th.

Sitting 58th in the world rankings, Chalmers has the top 50 and an invitation to the Masters in his sights.

Should he either win a tournament or push his way into the top 50 and remain there until April 2, he will join those driving up Magnolia Lane.

Chalmers has only once previously played in the Masters, back in 2001 when he failed to make the cut.

A few early top 10s in 2012 might just be enough to make the necessary leap up the standings.

“I played really nicely today,” Chalmers said.

“It was really important I get off to a good start on the front nine and I managed to do that.

“I am in a great spot here and now I have a great opportunity to push my claims to get into the US Masters and also ensure a trip to the WGC Matchplay.”

While super confident with his start, Chalmers was keeping a level head.

The 38-year-old is well aware he played on the easier north course and has to tackle the trickier south in round two.

The north averaged more than three shots easier for the field and was responsible for 23 of the top 26 golfers on day one, including the top 12.

“This event is set up in a way where you really don’t know how you stand until you play both courses,” Chalmers said.

“It certainly helps to get away to a good start on the north because, if you don’t, you’re going to find it tough.

“I hope now I can just continue the good form for three more days on the south.”
