Day into WGC Match Play Final

Australian Jason Day has stormed into the final of the World Golf Championships Match Play Championship at Dove Mountain after a 3 and 2 semi-final victory over American Rickie Fowler.

Day will now square off shortly against Frenchman Victor Dubuisson for the trophy and the $US1.5 million ($A1.7 million) winner’s cheque.

Dubuisson, the world No.30, defeated South African Ernie Els 1-up.

Day is already guaranteed to jump to a career high sixth in the world for making the final and will be world No.4 if he prevails in the championship match.

“I was just trying to hang tough and my game was solid. Hopefully I can take it into the final,” Day said on Sunday.

“This is why we work so hard. Especially those last six months with the World Cup win last year and the motivation going into this year, I felt really good.

“The start of the season, all I’m trying to do is win.

“I felt like I had a really good chance at maybe having a shot at winning this week and I’m definitely in the final now and really looking for to it.”

Despite playing 90 holes in his five wins so far Day said he’d be fit and raring to go in the afternoon final.

“I’m ready to go another 36 if I need to,” he said.

“90 holes in a week is a lot under tournament conditions, mentally and physically, it’s demanding.

“But that’s why I’ve been working so hard on my fitness and working so hard on my mental side. I feel ready for it.

“Obviously there is going to be some nerves but I’ve got a job to do out there and I need to execute my game plan that I’ve had all week and hopefully I can do that.

“I’m definitely going to fight until the end.”

Day sunk a 24-foot birdie putt on the opening hole for a 1-up lead and controlled the match from there, never relinquishing the lead.

While he missed short putts for wins on the fourth and fifth holes he jumped further ahead of world No.56 Fowler with wins on the seventh and eighth.

But just as he appeared to be cruising he gave Fowler a sniff by finding the desert on the ninth and after two failed attempts to get out, conceded the hole.

A huge par save on the 10th hole after having trouble in the rough ensured he didn’t stall his run and when he claimed the 11th hole he was cruising again at 3-up.

Facing elimination Fowler wouldn’t die wondering and mounted a comeback challenge winning the 12th and 13th holes to get within one.

But with wins on the 15th and 16th holes Day closed out any thought of a come from behind victory for the American and catapulted himself into the final.
