Day to play Australian Open in Sydney

Jason Day has announced he will join compatriot and Masters champion Adam Scott in Sydney for November’s Australian Open, pointing to a potential star partnership for Australia at the World Cup of Golf a week earlier.

Day has enjoyed a solid season on the PGA Tour, finishing in a tie for second at the US Open in June and third behind Scott at the Masters in April.

The 25-year-old Queenslander on Monday said he was looking forward to playing the Royal Sydney Golf Club event alongside confirmed starters Scott and two-time major winner Rory McIlrory.

“The Open has always had a special place in the hearts of Australian players and I’ll be ready to do battle with all the other guys at Royal Sydney and hopefully win my first Stonehaven Cup,” he said.

The world No.17 last played the Open in 2011 when he finished in a tie for fourth at The Lakes.

PGA of Australia chief executive Brian Thorburn said Day had been one of the most consistent players on the tour this season and welcomed his addition to a star-studded field.

The November 28-December 1 tournament falls less than a week after the biennial World Cup at Royal Melbourne Golf Club.

The 60-year-old tournament has been given a makeover and boasts a fat $8 million in prize money – the biggest purse ever for a tournament in Australia – with $7 million for the individual contest and $1 million for the traditional two-man national teams element.

While neither Scott nor Day have confirmed they will play the World Cup, Scott has previously said he is willing to back up from his Australian Masters title defence on the same course a week earlier.
