He likes going fast off the course but American Rickie Fowler says he’s prepared to wait as long as it takes to join Adam Scott as a Masters winner.
The motorsports enthusiast will line up alongside Scott at this week’s Australian PGA Championships at Royal Pines on the Gold Coast as one of the headline acts for the first big golf tournament of the summer.
Rated one of the best rising stars in the sport, the world No.43 says he can see similarities between his development and Scott’s rise from prospect to champion in recent years.
Since debuting at his first major in 2008, Fowler has a mixed record with a tie for fifth in the 2011 British Open his best major finish.
But after watching Scott break through to claim his first major title at Augusta National earlier this year, Fowler says he’s in no rush to prove his potential if it means he one day claims golf’s biggest honour.
“If I have to wait that long, so be it. I’ll wait as long as I have to for the green jacket,” Fowler told reporters on Tuesday.
“It was a special moment for Adam … seeing him make the putt on 18 and then going to the playoff, you could see how much it meant to him.”
Fowler might also one day head back Down Under through his other sporting passion in a quest to add the Bathurst 1000 crown to any of his golfing achievements.
“It’s (motorsport) always been a good way for me to let loose … clear my mind and have some fun,” he said.
“Down the road, I definitely see myself being a little more involved in spending some time in the seat and driving and where that takes me – whether it’s down here racing V8s or back in the US racing Le Mans – who knows? Could be fun.”
