Jason Day seeks winning habit in PGA

After a successful Australian summer Jason Day is aiming to convert home form into a winning habit on the US PGA tour.

Despite being a regular contender in the US, including at major championships, Day’s last win on the tour came at the 2010 Byron Nelson Championship.

But with victory in the World Cup at Royal Melbourne in November Day is confident he’s quashed talk of not being able to close out tournaments.

The world No.10 says he is now itching to kick start his US PGA Tour season at Torrey Pines this week where world No.1 Tiger Woods defends.

“Last year was really encouraging but at the same time it was super motivating to do even better,” Day told AAP.

“To finally see myself breakthrough after such a long time without winning was a real boost and reaffirmed what I believed; that I can win tournaments.

“The real pleasing part (in Melbourne) was just being patient and not getting ahead of myself and really being disciplined enough to just not think about what others were doing.

“Now I am working towards winning more and more.”

Day has set significant goals for 2014, a regular season event and a major championship on his to do list.

“A successful year is reaching all of your goals and last year I reached the majority of them except for getting a win on the US Tour,” Day explained.

“I have similar, pretty lofty goals again this year and I’ll only be completely satisfied if I make them.

“I’m sure if I keep giving myself the opportunities I will break through with a win out here again. I just have to keep my head in the game and continue to really want it more than anything else.”

Day was in Palm Springs last week but not playing the tour, instead he was preparing for his 2014 debut just outside San Diego where he is grouped with two major winners in world No.4 Phil Mickelson and Bubba Watson.

He leads a 10-strong Australian cast including Marc Leishman, Geoff Ogilvy, Aaron Baddeley, Robert Allenby, Stuart Appleby, Matt Jones, Scott Gardiner, Steven Bowditch and Bronson La’Cassie while Kiwis Tim Wilkinson and Danny Lee will also tee it up.

“I’m really looking forward to the start as it has felt like a long time coming. I’ve had some good rest and I am definitely hungry to get out there and compete against these guys again,” he said.
