Johnson joins rich Perth golf event

Seven-time PGA Tour winner Dustin Johnson will head to Western Australia for the first time next month to contest the $2 million Perth International.

The world No.25 has been added to a star-studded field that includes fellow American and defending champion Bo Van Pelt, South Africa’s Branden Grace and Australia’s back-to-back European Tour winner Brett Rumford.

Johnson, who has been ranked as high as No.4 in the world, won this year’s Tournament of Champions and tied for second at the Canadian Open in July.

“I love playing in Australia and the timing of the Perth International worked perfectly for my fall schedule,” the 29-year-old said on Friday.

“I have heard great things about the city and the lifestyle there, so I am really looking forward to playing in Western Australia for the first time.”

Johnson hasn’t played in Australia since The Presidents Cup in 2011 and organisers are confident he will draw big crowds at Lake Karrinyup Country Club.

“Dustin is one of golf’s longest hitters and I’m sure he’ll attract big galleries as he tackles the Lake Karrinyup course for the first time,” Eventscorp executive director Gwyn Dolphin said.

“The field for this year’s event is really taking shape and we are confident that spectators and television viewers alike are in for a feast of world class golf.”

The tournament, which has become the richest tour event in Australia, will run from October 17-20.
