Kaymer closing in on second major title

Germany’s Martin Kaymer is seemingly heading for a coronation as king of Pinehurst as the former world No.1 continues to hold court at the US Open.

Having led outright after all three completed rounds, Kaymer is five shots clear at the top midway through the final round.

Only feel good story Erik Compton, a double heart transplant recipient, is putting any semblance of heat on the 2010 PGA Championship winner.

Adam Scott and Jason Day have failed in their attempts to make a charge.

Kaymer is even on his final round through seven holes to remain eight-under for the championship, with Compton at three-under for the week through nine holes.

American Rickie Fowler is third alone at two-under.

Day is two-under on his round through 14 holes to be one-over, nine shots back but inside the top 10 in a tie for seventh.

The 26-year-old looked likely to get a run going after knocking in a 10-foot birdie on the second hole but failed to get any of his next five birdie chances, all between 10 and 20-feet, to drop.

A run of 10 straight pars followed before a birdie on the 13th hole.

Scott birdied the third hole but gave the shot right back on the fourth.

He dropped in a six-foot birdie on the sixth but parred the next eight holes before a bogey on the 15th to now sit three-over and tied 13th.

Kaymer is looking to win wire-to-wire (no ties) for just the eighth time in US Open history, joining Walter Hagan (1914), James Barnes (1921), Ben Hogan (1953), Tony Jacklin (1970), Tiger Woods (2000, 2002) and Rory McIlroy (2011).

Aaron Baddeley is two-over on his final round through 17 holes to be six-over and a tie for 27th.
