Mayakoba Golf Classic 2012 Preview

While all the attention this week is on the Accenture Match Play in Arizona the PGA Tour still rolls on with the tour heading south to Mexico for the Mayakoba Golf Classic at El Camaleon Golf Club in Playa del Carmen.
The course was designed by Greg Norman in 2004 and has been the home of this event since 2007. The landscape is magnificent with a tropical jungle, dense mangroves and oceanfront stretches of sand surrounding the course and resort.
El Camaleon plays at 6923 yards and was ranked the 5th most difficult Par 71 from the 11 non major courses played in 2011. Due to the tropical surroundings the weather can play a major role over the weekend with rain, storms and winds playing havoc with the scores.
While there is thick rough around the course the main stat to look at is greens in regulation. This has stood out year in year out. Experience on the course is also a big plus which is evident by looking at the leaderboards. Players with age and experience have always done well here.
With all this in mind two players stand out as great each way hopes for us this week.

BRIAN GAY

When it comes to course form you can’t go past Brian. He won here in 2008, was T20th in 2009 and T5th last year. This season he has had 4 starts which include a T6th Sony and T20th Pebble beach Pro-Am. Add to this his excellent stats of 1st in scrambling, 2nd in Par 4 performance, 5th in sand saves and 7th in driving accuracy. All this makes him a great each way chance.

HEATH SLOCUM

Heath is having a slowish start to the season after starting the season with two missed cuts. His latest two outings have shown signs of improvement with a T33rd Phoenix Open and T40th Pebble beach Pro-Am. His stats however stack up well for this course with 3rd in driving accuracy, 10th GIR from 100+ yards and 33rd in ball striking. In 2010 he was T13th here as well as a T3rd in 2009. At the odds he is well worth looking at to be in the mix come the weekend.

Odds: $34.00 Sportsbet Australia

It is also great to see 9 Aussies teeing it up this week which includes Greg Norman, Robert Allenby, Peter Lonard and Jarrod Lyle. Sportsbet Australia have a market for highest placed Aussie and I think Peter Lonard could be a good shout after a very promising T13th on the Colombia Championship last week on the Nationwide Tour.

Odds: $10.00 Top Australian Market
