Woods faces tough course at Oak Hill

The PGA Championship at Oak Hill Country Club will be the last chance this season for Tiger Woods to add to his list of major victories, but the odds-on favorite faces a competitive field.

Woods, a four-time PGA Championship winner, is coming off a seven-stroke victory at the WGC – Bridgestone Invitational.

But he’ll have to square off against the likes of world number two Phil Mickelson, recently victorious at the British Open, and last year’s PGA Championship winner, Rory McIlroy.

“I’m looking forward to it,” Woods said after his win at Bridgestone. “As far as wanting it more than any other (major), no.

“It’s the same. Those (are) the events that we try and peak for and try and win.”

Oak Hills Country Club in Pittsfield, New York, last hosted the PGA Championship in 2003, when it was won by Shaun Michael, who then failed to qualify for the PGA Tour the next year.

Golf experts say Oak Hill’s East Course is known for its punishing rough. Players who land a high percentage of shots on the fairway will have an advantage over those who specialise in hitting the ball long.

“The rough is extremely long and thick, I mean, as long and thick of rough as I’ve seen in a long time,” Mickelson told reporters after a practice round last week.

Another factor may be the weather, which could bring showers and possibly even thunderstorms for Thursday and Friday. The forecast is sunny for the final two rounds on Saturday and Sunday, however.

Most odds-makers place Woods at the top of their list, followed by Mickelson and then Australian Adam Scott, who won the first major of the season at the Masters and is currently ranked fifth in the world.
