The 2020 Wyndham Championship tees off from Sedgefield Country Club in North Carolina on Friday morning following a thrilling conclusion to last week’s PGA Championship.
Golf fans will have fewer options to choose from with several top names electing to take a week off in preparation for the FedEx Cup Playoffs, which tee off on August 21 at the Northern Trust.
Even so, there is double-digit value on offer atop the market, while it’s worth noting defending champ J.T. Poston won this event last year at 100-1.
To help you out, we’ve scoured the entire field and offer our three best bets below.
Wyndham Championship Best Bet
Paul Casey at $21.00
The 43-year-old caught everyone off guard last week when he finished runner-up to Collin Morikawa. Casey also finished T5 in pars made, fourth in shots gained: approach the green and 12th in driving accuracy. To go along with those numbers, the Englishman owns three Top 20 finishes at Sedgefield in three appearances since 2014.Wyndham Championship Best Value
Harris English at $26.00
I’ve been a big fan of English over the last month and I think he’s well on his way to a third Tour victory sometime very soon. The 31-year-old has now finished Top 20 in his last four tournaments and couldn’t have been more impressive last week carding a final round 66 at Harding Park. English has played this event in each of the last five years with an outright 11th to his name back in 2018, so you know he’s experienced with the ins and outs of Sedgefield.
Wyndham Championship Best Roughie
Doc Redman at $91.00
This would be an absolute story and a half if the hometown boy were to claim his first win on Tour this weekend. Redman has missed the cut in back-to-back appearances at this event, but he has shown some real promise over the last two months with three finishes inside the Top 25 since play resumed. A final round 67 at the PGA Championship last week also makes him worth a small shout.
Wyndham Championship Best of the Rest
Webb Simpson at $11.00
No surprise to find this year’s Phoenix Open and RBC Heritage winner at the top of the market. Simpson has played this event 11 times in the past and has finished top five in each of the last three years. He’s turned into a consistent all-rounder this season ranking among the PGA’s best in driving accuracy, greens in regulation and scoring average. Two middle rounds of under 70 last week at the PGA Championship also puts him in good stead for another big performance.
Brooks Koepka at $11.00
Koepka appeared well on his way to defending his title last week after stringing together three consecutive rounds under 70. Things went askew on the final day though as the American finished 4-over. Nonetheless, it appears Koepka is back to his best as he appears to make his sixth consecutive tournament appearance. The 30-year-old finished T6 at this event back in 2015, and if he can find some more accuracy off the tee, he should prove hard to beat.
Patrick Reed at $17.00
Reed will hold fond memories of this course after breaking through for his first Tour win at this event back in 2013. He’s missed the cut twice since play resumed but does have three finishes inside the top ten to his name. Last week’s final round 66 to finish T13 at Harding Park could be a sign of things to come, while it’s also comforting to know Reed has finished inside the Top 25 in his last three appearances at this event.
Tommy Fleetwood at $19.00
Hard to know what to make of Fleetwood (again). He went 70, 64, 70, 73 last week at Harding Park to finish T29 in another up and down performance. The Englishman finished ninth overall in shots gained: off the tee, but his short game struggled mightily in comparison. This is Fleetwood’s first look at Sedgefield, so I’m happy to leave him out of my betting.
Justin Rose at $23.00
Rose missed the cut in three consecutive tournaments prior to finishing outright ninth last week at the PGA Championship. He was absolute money with the putter, an overdue turnaround for a guy that is normally brilliant in all areas. He played this course to a T5 back in 2009 and rates as one to watch in the market.
Billy Horschel at $34.00
Horschel has been thereabouts since play resumed and he has a very strong track record to suit on this course. The 33-year-old finished outright sixth at this event last year and 11th the year before. He also bookended last week’s T43 at Harding Park with a pair of 69’s.
Brendon Todd at $36.00
Plenty to like about Todd’s game since resuming. The American has finished Top 25 in his last three tournaments and is currently the third-most accurate player on Tour with the driver. He’s missed the cut in four of his five appearances at this event, but he does rank 25th in scoring average.
Kevin Kisner at $41.00
The 36-year-old finished in style last week at Harding Park with a final round 67 to score inside the Top 20. Kisner is also fairly familiar with Sedgefield having played this tournament five times previously. He finished Top 10 in back-to-back starts during 2014 and 2016 and looks a genuine dark horse at very tasty odds.
J.T. Poston at $67.00
The defending champ has played to mix results after claiming his first Tour win here last year. Poston finished T75 last week at the PGA Championship, but he did show some form when golf resumed finishing inside the top ten at both the Charles Schwab and the RBC Heritage. He’s struggled to find the greens at times this year but has shown some promise off the tee and with the putter.
