Spirit Of Boom has never won at Doomben but trainer Tony Gollan is confident that can change as the six-year-old prepares to bow out of racing to embark on a stud career.
A Group One winner over 1200m, Spirit Of Boom will be having his penultimate start in Saturday’s Group One Doomben 10,000 (1350m) in which stablemate Temple Of Boom runs as the least favoured of the Gollan duo.
Temple Of Boom caused an upset when he edged his elder brother out of first place in the Group Two Victory Stakes on April 26. Spirit Of Boom then finished second to Famous Seamus in the Group One BTC Cup in which Temple Of Boom was fourth.
Gollan believes Spirit Of Boom is well drawn in barrier two even though he is not a noted speed horse.
“The way the draw has panned out I think he will get the perfect sit on them. I can even see the leading pack breaking away,” Gollan said.
“Michael (Rodd) should be able to just sit behind them and get a cart into the race, maybe even from my other runner Temple Of Boom.”
Gollan said he had no doubt Spirit Of Boom was ready to run a strong 1350m.
“It doesn’t look that way on paper but some of his best runs have been at 1350 metres,” he said.
“A couple of times he has been caught deep but still finished close up over the 1350m.”
Gollan said Temple Of Boom would be going forward in the race and was not without a chance.
“He is going just as well as Spirit Of Boom,” Gollan said.
“I know everyone says he is a wet tracker but don’t forget we are coming to the end of the Doomben part of the carnival and I reckon the track will be a bit sandy and softer.”
Spirit Of Boom will have his final run in the Group One Stradbroke on June 7 before going to stud where he is likely to serve 120 mares.
He will move past the $2 million prize money mark if he runs in the first three in Saturday’s 10,000.
Buffering remained favourite on Friday to $3.80 favourite with the TAB ahead of Rebel Dane and Spirit Of Boom at $4.80 while Famous Seamus was at $7 and Temple Of Boom at $13.
