Honeymooning trainer Tony Gollan got the money for ski lessons and became unbackable odds to win his first Brisbane premiership with a double at Eagle Farm on Wednesday.
Gollan produced two outstanding winners in Heart Of A Warrior ($5.50) and Traveston Girl ($2.60 fav) to lift him to 52 metropolitan winners for the season.
It put him eight wins in front of Matt Dunn on 44 winners and 8-1/2 winners clear of defending champion Robert Heathcote in third on 43-1/2.
There are 10 meetings left in the Brisbane metropolitan season and it would take a near miracle for either Dunn or Heathcote to catch Gollan.
Gollan and his wife Jane are on their honeymoon at Queenstown in New Zealand where the Eagle Farm trainer is learning to ski.
However, he was on the phone before Traveston Girl won the Mount Franklin Two-Year-Old Maiden (1200m) with instructions for stable foreman John Fleming.
“We aren’t crowing yet but we are going to be hard to catch in the premiership from here,” Fleming said.
Traveston Girl trialled well before she was beaten first up but was improved by that run on Wednesday.
Heart Of A Warrior was having his first start when he won the Gallopers Maiden (1300m) by seven lengths in class record time.
The Show A Heart gelding had his preparation held up by a foot abscess but won a trial in style in the lead up to his racing debut.
Winning jockey Ryan Wiggins said it was an impressive win and he’s keen to stick with the three-year-old.
“You won’t get me off him next start with a crow bar,” he said.
Meanwhile, a nice win by mare Giovanna Bella ($5) in the Mullins Lawyers Hcp (1200m) won’t prolong her racing career.
Trainer Matt Dunn said Giovanna Bella would most likely head to stud in the new breeding season.
“She is very talented but has a few problems and it is a matter of holding her together,” Dunn said.
Two-year-old Wicked Temptation ($12) gave Mark Webb his first metropolitan winner since moving his stables from Toowoomba to the Sunshine Coast.
“I had nothing left to prove in Toowoomba and I was keen to be near my daughters who live on the Coast,” Webb said.
Jockey Michael Hellyer was suspended for eight meetings for causing interference aboard Adenarius on the first turn in the Bundaberg Distilling Hcp (1800m).
The suspension will start on Saturday night and end on July 10.
