The Australian Cup headlines an outstanding nine-race program at HQ on Saturday.
It has been one of the standout races in Australasia since its inception, and the Australian Cup has been won by several stars of the turf.
Who will join that illustrious list this year? I’ve run the rule over the field, and you can find my complete 2023 Australian Cup Tips below.
Suggested Bets
- 3 Units straight out #4 Nonconformist
- Boxed Trifecta of the selections below
Australian Cup – Winner
He has returned some stunning performances in some of our best races, and I think that Nonconformist can and will break through for his first career Group 1 victory in the Australian Cup.
Nonconformist finished second in both the Caulfield Stakes and the Caulfield Cup during his 2021 Spring preparation, but didn’t show his best in 2022.
Having been all but forgotten in Blamey Stakes betting prior to his return this time, the Rebel Raider gelding produced one of the best performances of his career to win, and I am only expecting him to improve second up and out to 2000m.
Suggested Bet: No. 4 Nonconformist
Australian Cup – 2nd
Cascadian wound back the clock with a stunning performance in last weekend’s All-Star Mile, and he is a fitting favourite in Australian Cup betting.
Cascadian is a multiple Group 1 winner, and he picked off both the Hill Stakes and the Craven Plate over 2000m during his recent Spring Carnival preparation.
Fitter third-up this week, I like that he is on the short back up, and he does still look up to something of this quality.
Suggested Bet: No. 1 Cascadian
Australian Cup – 3rd
Steinem returned an eye-catching winner of the Peter Young Stakes last month, and this is the next logical step for her.
The Frankel mare has always hinted at top-line ability, and she has won a few nice black type races throughout her career.
I thought that her fresh effort suggested that she might have returned a better horse this time, and she has performed well at this point of her preparation previously.
Suggested Bet: No. 14 Steinem
Australian Cup – 4th
One galloper that I thought was over the odds in Australian Cup betting is El Patroness ($51 at publish).
El Patroness was a stunning winner of the ATC Oaks at the conclusion of last year’s Autumn Carnival, and after enjoying a nice long break, she returned with a fair effort in the Frances Tressady Stakes.
She took plenty of improvement into her second start when fourth in the Matron Stakes over 1600m last time out, and she’s another who will go to another level third-up and out to 2000m.
Patty Moloney can find a nice position in transit from barrier 6, and I really do think that El Patroness can be in the finish of this race.
Suggested Bet: No. 13 El Patroness
