A field of 12 will step out in the second Group 1 on Super Saturday at Flemington, the Australian Cup.
With $1.5 million on the line, the 2000m feature has attracted several world-class stayers, including recent Apollo Stakes and Group 1 winner Think It Over, promising American import Spanish Mission, and the always consistent Cascadian.
Co-trainers Anthony and Sam Freedman will be hoping to replicate Homeman’s success last year with Delphi and Steel Prince, while Bjorn Baker can claim his third Group 1 with last fortnight’s Chipping Norton Stakes runner-up, She’s Ideel.
There’s a case to be made for a few in this year’s field, and our thoughts on each runner can be found in 2022 Australian Cup Preview.
1. Cascadian (2)
- Group 1’s: 1 (2021 Doncaster Mile)
- Track: 4:0-2-2
- Distance: 1:0-1-0
- Trainer: James Cummings
- Jockey: Damien Oliver
- Odds: $8.50
Was seen doing his best work late for third in the C.F. Orr fresh and proved too strong back in class winning the Group 2 Peter Young Stakes at Caulfield three weeks ago. Excellent third-up record with two wins on the board and has form around Zaaki during the spring. Seems to be wanting further now and is a genuine each-way contender.
2. Think It Over (4)
- Group 1’s: 1 (2021 George Ryder Stakes)
- Track: 0:0-0-0
- Distance: 10:5-0-1
- Trainer: Kerry Parker
- Jockey: Nash Rawiller
- Odds: $3.00
As genuine as they come. Won the Apollo Stakes at Randwick first-up and only weakened over the final 150m when fourth to Verry Elleegant in the Chipping Norton on a very wet track. Untried at Flemington, but has done some of his best work third-up. Should appreciate getting back on top of the ground and is tough to fault with fitness on his side.
3. Spanish Mission (10)
- Group 1’s: 0
- Track: 1:0-0-1
- Distance: 1:1-0-0
- Trainer: Peter Moody
- Jockey: James McDonald
- Odds: $4.40
Strong in all three runs since venturing to Australia. Ran a big race for third in the Melbourne Cup and is four weeks between runs since nabbing a place in the Carlyon Cup at Caulfield. Has challenged two quality horses (Stradivarius and Verry Elleegant) over the last calendar year and has a class edge over some of these. Will appreciate racing over further and a win under James McDonald would not surprise.
4. Ho Ho Khan (12)
- Group 1’s: 0
- Track: 0:0-0-0
- Distance: 9:1-0-1
- Trainer: Mitchell Freedman
- Jockey: Ms Tahlia Hope
- Odds: $41.00
Talented international stayer that has held his own at this level in Hong Kong. Finished fourth in the Hong Kong Vase two years ago and has run some big races in Australia. No query over the trip given he was clear four-length winner of the Hobart Cup last month, but this is a big step up in class from an awkward gate.
5. Steel Prince (7)
- Group 1’s: 0
- Track: 7:2-1-1
- Distance: 5:1-0-1
- Trainer: Anthony & Sam Freedman
- Jockey: Jye McNeil
- Odds: $67.00
Unplaced in three starts at this level. Finished second-last in the Peter Young Stakes first-up at Caulfield, his first run in close to a year. Fitter but is unlikely to trouble these.
6. Surprise Baby (6)
- Group 1’s: 0
- Track: 7:1-1-1
- Distance: 2:0-0-0
- Trainer: Gavid Bedggood
- Jockey: Dean Holland
- Odds: $41.00
Clearly has the talent but has struggled to put it all together thus far. Has been over a year since he last won a race and has struggled over this trip previously. Worked home nicely first-up at Caulfield but would need to improve lengths to factor here.
7. Yonkers (5)
- Group 1’s: 0
- Track: 2:0-0-1
- Distance: 10:3-2-1
- Trainer: Chris Waller
- Jockey: Kerrin McEvoy
- Odds: $34.00
Tends to be thereabouts more often than not, albeit it against easier company. Worked to the line well second-up at Caulfield and should be fitter for it. On debut at Group 1 level though and is likely to struggle.
8. Callsign Mav (11)
- Group 1’s: 3 (2020, 2021 Tarzino Trophy, 2021 Windsor Park Plate)
- Track: 0:0-0-0
- Distance: 2:0-0-1
- Trainer: Danny O’Brien
- Jockey: Jamie Mott
- Odds: $14.00
Three time Group 1 winner in New Zealand. No match in Australian debut in last year’s Cox Plate, but stuck on well for second in the Carlyon Cup first-up at Caulfield. Ran second to Avantage last year which ties in well with Kiwi superstar Melody Belle. Can play a roll.
9. Delphi (1)
- Group 1’s: 0
- Track: 1:0-0-0
- Distance: 2:1-1-0
- Trainer: Anthony & Sam Freedman
- Jockey: Mark Zahra
- Odds: $19.00
Settled forward first-up in the Peter Young Stakes and only weakened out over the final 100m. Has won previously second-up but is facing a stiffer challenge here racing at weight-for-age and Group 1 level for the first time.
10. Maximal (9)
- Group 1’s: 0
- Track: 0:0-0-0
- Distance: 1:0-1-0
- Trainer: John O’Shea
- Jockey: Hugh Bowman
- Odds: $16.00
Lightly raced European import that is still finding his footing in Australia. Far from disgraced when sixth in the Golden Eagle last year and probably over-raced first-up in the Apollo. Capable of much better and is worth thought in exotics.
11. She’s Ideel (9)
- Group 1’s: 0
- Track: 2:0-0-0
- Distance: 5:3-1-0
- Trainer: Bjorn Baker
- Jockey: Ms Jamie Kah
- Odds: $10.00
Settled too far back first-up in the Apollo but showed real improvement putting Verry Elleegant to the test in the Chipping Norton. No knock coming off second-best to the mighty mare, while her outstanding third-up record (three wins, one placing) reads extremely well. Not sure if Flemington is her go but she has big claims over her preferred trip with Jamie Kah steering.
12. Duais (8)
- Group 1’s: 1 (2021 Queensland Oaks)
- Track: 0:0-0-0
- Distance: 3:2-0-0
- Trainer: Edward Cummings
- Jockey: Joshua Parr
- Odds: $8.50
Fitter for two runs back and should appreciate getting out to a more suitable distance now. Ran second in the ATC Oaks at Randwick last autumn and then resumed at Eagle Farm winning the Group 1 Queensland Oaks. Was seen doing her best work late two weeks ago in the Chipping Norton and probably would have finished closer with better luck down the straight. Should appreciate firmer footing now and was a strong third-up winner last time in.
