Australian Guineas at Flemington Tips, Race Previews and Selections – 4/3/2023

The Australian Guineas is always a highlight of the Autumn Carnival and some of the country’s best three-year-olds will assemble for the Group 1 feature at Flemington on Saturday afternoon.

The Australian Guineas honour roll is packed to the brim with stars of the Australasian turf, and the likes of Jacquinot, Elliptical and Mr Maestro will look to join the list this year.

Who have I put on top? Read on to my complete 2023 Australian Guineas Tips to find out!

Suggested Bets

Australian Guineas – Winner

Truth be told he has probably become my favourite horse, and I have put Jacquinot on top of my 2023 Australian Guineas first four.

Jacquinot hinted at top level ability from the first moment that he stepped out competitively, but he really began to realise it during his spring prep last year by winning the Golden Rose.

He is undefeated in two starts back this time, including a second career Group 1 in the CF Orr, and he’ll only improve third-up into the Australian Guineas.

Do I think that he is more of a 1400m horse? Yes. Do I think that he is just the best horse in the Australian Guineas field, though? Absolutely, and I think that will prove the difference on Saturday.

Suggested Bet: No. 1 Jacquinot

Australian Guineas – 2nd

It’s a pretty clear-cut Australian Guineas quinella in my opinion, and the only one that could knock off Jacquinot is Elliptical.

Elliptical has recorded two wins and three minors from his seven career starts to date, and he was unlucky not to taste success at the highest level in spring when finishing second in both the Neds Caulfield Guineas and the Spring Champion Stakes.

He returned a winner in the CS Hayes Stakes here a fortnight ago; his first black type victory, and he will only improve second up and out to a mile this week.

Suggested Bet: No. 2 Elliptical

Australian Guineas – 3rd

Elkington Road was only half a length behind Elliptical in the CS Hayes when resuming, and I thought that the $27 about him in Australian Guineas betting (at publish) was a ludicrous price.

The All Too Hard gelding stamped himself as one to watch during his debut campaign, winning his first two starts and finishing second in the Group 3 Carbine Club most notably.

He clearly goes well with a run under his belt, and he is drawn to receive a lovely run in transit under Jamie Mott.

Suggested Bet: No. 9 Elkington Road

Australian Guineas – 4th

At publish, Attrition is the third elect in Australian Guineas betting ($7.50), and he takes his place in the field at full fitness.

A veteran of just five starts, Attrition broken his maiden first-up at Sandown in January, before franking that performance with a dominant four-length triumph in BM64 company at Geelong.

He was sent off a $4 chance in the CS Hayes last a fortnight ago and finished fifth, but given how many horses were in the finish of that race, the run probably was better than the result suggests.

He’s drawn a peach in barrier 7, while the booking of Jamie Kah adds further confidence.

Suggested Bet: No. 14 Attrition
