Bargain buy looks to win $2million dollar Golden Slipper 2014

In what could be one of the biggest rags to riches stories in recent years in Australian horse racing, Alpha Miss has been paid up to run in Saturday’s $3.5 million dollar Golden Slipper after costing owners a measly $6,000 at the Magic Millions weanling sale.

In an era where horses go through the sales rings and sell for monstrous amounts of money the story of Alpha Miss shows there is still the opportunity for the everyday person to own a horse in one of the richest races in the world.

‘Lucky Owners’ the sire of Alpha Miss couldn’t sum up the situation any better, with the two year old filly taking her place in Saturday’s Slipper field as a $26 chance in the market.

The Gary Nickson trained filly has had five career starts for three wins and a third including two listed wins to her name which helped her amass over $240,000 in earnings cementing her spot in the race.

Alpha Miss burst onto the scene early in the two year old season winning both of her starts at Randwick during 2013 in impressive but narrow victories. She returned in the Widden Stakes with a disappointing fourth after leading and weakening late, before winning at Warwick Farm at her next start beating Memorial who was well supported in early Slipper betting. She then ran a good third behind the two current Golden Slipper favourites which suggests she is right in the race on Saturday.

Her big list of owners will no doubt be hoping for a win on Saturday but either way this shows why horse racing is one of the most thrilling sports in the world and that you don’t need to be a multi-millionaire to enjoy the excitement of Group 1 racing.
