Bendigo Cup Tips, Field Preview and Selections – 2021

We are amidst a purple patch of midweek feature racing and the action continues in country Victoria this week on Bendigo Cup Day!

$400K goes on the line, and the 2021 Bendigo Cup field contains plenty of classy stayers, including the likes of Amade, Tooradin and Smokin’ Romans.

Bendigo Cup – Winner

No. 5 Tooradin

I’m backing Tooradin to bounce back when he takes his place in the Bendigo Cup field.

Tooradin has been a strong and consistent performer for the Maher & Eustace stable all year, and he recorded consecutive wins in races at Caulfield and Flemington before a luckless run in the Neds Herbert Power Stakes last time.

This is a drop in class from that contest, he gets into this race well under the conditions and I think that he will take a power of beating.

Bendigo Cup – 2nd

No. 1 Amade

Amade kept all of his best work for late when fourth, beaten four lengths by Tralee Rose in the Geelong Cup last week, and he can fight out the finish of the Bendigo Cup.

The eight-year-old son of Casamento finished midfield in the Naturalism Stakes when resuming this time, and while he was awful in the Bart Cummings, there was a lot to like about last week’s effort.

He strikes this race in peak condition, but he has been charged with carrying topweight and I just wonder if he’ll be feeling it late.

Bendigo Cup – 3rd

No. 8 Smokin’ Romans

There is no doubt that Smokin’ Romans has found career-best form in 2021 and he can run another good race in the Bendigo Cup.

The Pierro gelding recorded three-consecutive wins to end his winter prep this year, and he resumed earlier this month with a nice effort for second behind Wil John at Caulfield.

This is a rise in class, but he is another galloper who gets into the race well at the weights, he strips fitter and he does look to have the class required to compete effectively at this grade.

Bendigo Cup – 4th

No. 3 Wentwood

Wentwood only just missed in the Neds Coongy Cup last time out, and I’m interested to see what he does getting out to a mile and a half on Wednesday.

The Pour Moi gelding finished fourth, beaten nearly four lengths by Floating Artist at Sandown when resuming this time, but mustered an eye-catching turn of foot to finish a head by Duais last time.

Fitter third-up, this looks the next logical step for him.
