Horse Racing News: Bernie Miller eyeing Saturday company with his Joker

Trainer Bernie Miller is hopeful exciting galloper Jokers Grin can take his winning form from last start at Northam to tomorrow’s Belmont Park meeting.

Jokers Grin, a brother of Group 3 winner Cup Night, will line up in tomorrow’s Macmahon Handicap (1000m), where he will be out to make it two wins from his first three starts.

Miller said he was impressed by the gelding’s maiden win.

“It took the pressure off a bit and it was good to see what the horse has got,” Bernie Miller told The Races WA.

“Patty has been doing a bit of work with him trying to teach him the way we want him to race.

“Each run he’s had he’s looks like he’s getting better at it.

“His manners are also slowly getting better at home.”

Jokers Grin faces another small but select field in tomorrow’s event, which includes Close At Hand, Silver Eye, Magnasonic and Ayumi.

The son of Maschino opened a $2.25 favourite with online bookies but was quickly supported into $1.85 ahead of Close At Hand ($5.50) and Magnasonic ($7).

Miller said he hoped to get Jokers Grin to Saturday company after tomorrow.

“The way he’s going and doing things better, I’d like to get him through this run and if he’s fit and healthy there’s a three-year-old handicap in two or three weeks,” he said.

“It’s very pleasing the fact he keeps improving all the time.

“You never know what the next 12 months will bring.”
