Blue-blooded colt wins impressively on debut

Blue-blooded colt Kandinsky Abstract has shown he just might have the talent to match his $3 million price tag after overcoming difficulties to post an emphatic debut win at Canterbury.

A brother to multiple Group 1 winner Sunlight and dual stakes victor Sisstar, Kandinsky Abstract is by sire sensation Zoustar out of grand producer Solar Charged and his high-profile owners include Coolmore, Debbie Kepitis’ Woppitt Bloodstock and Chris Waller Racing.

Sent out a $3.90 chance with betr in Wednesday’s All Too Hard @ Vinery Stud Plate (1200m), the Waller-trained Kandinsky Abstract was hemmed in on the fence when the field straightened for home and had to shoulder his way into the clear before careering away to beat Celestial Legend ($18) by 1-1/4 lengths.

“It’s a courageous effort from him,” Waller stable representative Damien Fitton said.

“It’s very hard for two-year-olds to barge their way out at their first start and really show their muscle.

“He’s a quality colt, of course he cost $3 million, but he was bought by some very good judges in the industry and I think we’ve got a nice horse on our hands.”

Winning jockey James Mcdonald was equally effusive and said the colt had all the hallmarks of a horse destined for bigger things.

“He’s a very nice animal, moves extremely well with a great demeanour so he’s in for a bright future,” McDonald said.

“I just love the way he executed his gallop. He relaxed well in behind the pace and showed a really good turn of foot.”

Kandinsky Abstract holds entries for the BTC Sires’ Produce (1400m) and J J Atkins Stakes (1600m) in Brisbane and according to Fitton, both targets are on the radar.

“Chris will make a plan with the owners but most importantly he got the win today and now it’s just seeing how he recovers from the race and we’ll make a call later in the week,” Fitton said.

Meanwhile, jockey Jason Collett has been taken to hospital for precautionary x-rays on his neck and shoulder after being dislodged from his mount Magnatear in the third race at Canterbury.

Collett has a full book of rides at Gosford on Saturday including Clemenceau for Hawkes Racing in the Takeover Target Stakes (1200m) and Welwal for Waller in The Coast (1600m).
