Bugatty to be entered for Lightning Stakes 2014

Boomwaa may not be the only two-year-old to line up in the weight-for-age Lightning Stakes with Bugatty now in the mix.

Co-trainer Wayne Hawkes said the 1000 metres of the Group One sprint at Flemington on Saturday week held more appeal than the Blue Diamond Stakes over 1200m.

Dean Yendall has the ride on the Robbie Laing-trained Boomwaa at 46kg, winning out over Dean Holland who can also make the light weight.

“We’ll nominate him for the race, but I nominate a lot of horses for a lot of races,” Hawkes told Racing Victoria.

“It’s not because the Blue Diamond is a hot race or anything like that, he’s just not a 1200-metre horse.

“So we’ll nominate and see what else is in it.”

Bugatty finished second to Blue Diamond contender Chivalry on debut at Moonee Valley in December then won over 1000m on the Flemington straight course.

The colt was outsprinted over the final 100 metres of the Chairman’s Stakes (1100m) by Nayeli last Saturday, with the winner now third favourite for the Blue Diamond.

The last two-year-old to run in the Lightning was filly the Clever Zoe who finished second to champion sprinter Schillaci.

She carried 44kg and a young Stephen Baster.

Few two-year-olds have contested weight-for-age races in recent years with Hawkes’ training partner and father John successful with Commands on the final day of the 1998-99 season in the Missile Stakes.
