News:

Craig Newitt will leave Melbourne racing at the end of the year to begin a six-month contract in Singapore.

The 29-year-old has ridden at feature meetings in Singapore since 2009 but will start his stay in the prominent Asian racing centre on January 1.

Newitt will join fellow Australians Corey Brown, Danny Beasley and John Powell on the Singapore racing scene.

He has ridden 26 Group One winners, including this year’s Oakleigh Plate and TJ Smith Stakes on Lankan Rupee during the Melbourne and Sydney autumn carnivals.

Singapore trainers have used the Tasmanian-born jockey in feature races at Kranji over the last few seasons, including aboard Tenzing and Dragonfly in the 2012 and 2013 Singapore Gold Cup.

Newitt has also tasted Royal Ascot success aboard the outstanding mare Miss Andretti, which claimed the King’s Stand Stakes when it carried Group Two status in 2007.

He recently rode a treble when representing Australian in an international jockeys’ challenge at the Selangor Turf Club in Malaysia.

Stewards soured Newitt’s homecoming after suspending the jockey for eight meetings on a careless riding charge at Geelong last Friday.
