Canterbury races Tips, Race Previews and Selections – 26/5/2021

The major Wednesday metropolitan meet in Sydney will be hosted at Canterbury this week.

The rail will remain in the true position around the entire course and at publish, the track is rated in the Soft (6) range.

Race 1 – 12:50pm – ACY Securities Handicap (1250m)

Divina hasn’t been seen at the races since February and has had just one career start, but she was competitive on debut and can win at Canterbury on Wednesday.

The Astern filly showed ability prior to making her debut, and ran home well to finish third behind Hilal and King Of Sparta on the Kensington course at Randwick.

She’s had the benefit of a trial in the lead-up to her return and I am happy to have a decent crack here.

Race 2 – 1:25pm – Blue Point @ Darley Handicap (1250m)

Just two of the fourteen confirmed starters in this race have experience and plenty that a prominent in betting are on debut.

I’m happy to stay out of this one from a betting perspective.

Race 3 – 2:00pm – Ranvet Handicap (1550m)

Azarmin will take winning form into the third at Canterbury on Wednesday and looks well placed to make it two in a row.

The Animal Kingdom mare has continued to improve with each start back from a freshen-up, culminating in an easy win at Warwick Farm last time out.

With the horse that she beat by two lengths last time, Monsieur Sisu running an impressive second at Rosehill on Saturday, I’m confident the form out of that race is good.

Race 4 – 2:35pm – Vinery Stud Handicap (1250m)

Osamu didn’t win like a very odds-on favourite should have at Newcastle last time, but I’m confident that he’ll take improvement for that hit-out and can continue his rise through the grades this week.

The Exceed And Excel gelding raced well around some good horses during his early preparations, and while he couldn’t quite make up the ground of Luminoso when resuming this time, he finally broke his maiden last time out.

Fitter third-up, from the good draw and with some relief in the weights, I’m happy to give him another chance.

Race 5 – 3:10pm – Benchmark 72 Handicap (1250m)

Derbari will take plenty of improvement into the fifth at Canterbury on Wednesday and looks up to winning.

The Joe Pride-trained gelding was a model of consistency last time in, but he quite clearly needed the run when he finished sixth, beaten five lengths over 1000m at Warwick Farm when resuming.

He’ll relish the rise in trip and is drawn to receive a lovely run.

Race 6 – 3:45pm – Bowermans Commercial Furniture Handicap (1900m)

Montserrat has improved for two starts back this time and looms as a winning chance in the sixth at Canterbury on Wednesday.

The Mark Newnham-trained gelding didn’t show a lot when finishing down the order here first-up, but he took plenty of improvement into a credible third placing behind Prince Of Arragon and Tectonicus at Gosford last time out.

The form from that race has been franked and this looks to be beautiful placement.

Race 7 – 4:20pm – XXXX Handicap (1550m)

Cadenabbia looks the one to beat in the last at Canterbury on Wednesday.

The Redoute’s Choice colt was a consistent performer during his debut prep in the sprint, and he returned at Warwick Farm a fortnight ago for a lovely win in BM68 company.

He’ll only improve for that effort and I really cannot find a reason why he won’t be in the finish.
