Events during the Sydney autumn have prompted trainer Robbie Laing to reassess his spring plans for smart colt Boomwaa.
Boomwaa won the Group Three Maribyrnong Plate in the spring before competing well without winning in strong races during the autumn.
Laing had initially planned to set Boomwaa for races below the top echelon in the spring but Peggy Jean’s win in the Group One ATC Sires’ Produce Stakes convinced him to alter his thoughts.
Peggy Jean defeated Boomwaa by a head when the pair met in the Inglis Classic in January and Laing will give the colt the chance in top three-year-old company next season.
“I think I’ll train him up for the Caulfield Guineas,” Laing said.
“I always thought he was a second-rater but gee, you go through his form with Peggy Jean in it, and I think I have under-rated him.
“I wished he was back up Sydney when all the horses he had form around were winning.”
Laing also has Group One thoughts for Golconda after her two-year-old season yielded a stakes win before a disappointing autumn campaign.
The Cranbourne horseman sent the Snitzel filly for a spell after her rearward effort in the Group One Blue Diamond Stakes in February.
“She’ll be set for the Thousand Guineas in the spring,” Laing said.
Both Boomwaa and Golconda will return to Laing’s stable in the coming weeks.
Saturday’s Caulfield winner Lord Of The Sky will continue his winter campaign which is aimed at the Listed Monash Stakes (1000m) and the Group Three Bletchingly Stakes (1100m) later in the winter.
Meanwhile, Laing said a stud deal has still not been completed for Victoria Derby winner Polanski.
Polanski’s career ended when he was injured in the Group One Futurity Stakes in February.
