Chris Waller trains five winners at home track

Rosehill-based trainer Chris Waller has had a field day at his home track training five winners

Champion horseman Chris Waller has shown why he has a commanding lead in the trainer’s premiership producing five winners at Rosehill Gardens, with jockey Tommy Berry being on board for four of those victories.

Waller, who was at Eagle Farm with his Oaks contingent, kicked off the nine-race card with his promising two-year-old Cape Breton ($3.80) winning the 1400 metre handicap with Berry in the irons. The win made it two from two for the Vancouver colt who may now head up north for a tilt at the Group 1 J J Atkins at Eagle Farm next Saturday.

Wicklow ($3.70F) then saluted two races later in the 1800 metre handicap with the European import producing a withering burst to win going away from them. This time Brenton Avdulla was in the saddle who had piloted him for his previous victory at Newcastle.

The Berry-Waller combination again came to the fore in the next race when Oscar Zulu ($5) proved too strong in the finish over the 1400 metre handicap. The victory brought up win number three for the Epaulette gelding and takes his earnings over the $240,000 mark.

The jockey-trainer success didn’t stop there with Great House ($3.80F) just nailing stablemate Wairere Falls in the 1500 metre Benchmark 78, with Waller bringing up the trifecta with Zing in third.

The duo finished off the day with Murabiz ($4.80F) landing the second-last race, but it was a bittersweet event for Berry who copped a suspension for the steer. Stewards deemed that he caused interference to Kathy O’Hara’s mount Pandano at the 150 metre mark and ordered Berry sit out six meetings starting Sunday June 13.

Berry will still be able to ride at next Saturday’s Stradbroke meeting at Eagle Farm, where his mounts include Wild Planet in the feature.

He is free to return on June 23 when he will resume his chase for the premiership title.
