Colosimo sets out on path to Magic Millions

Premier Sydney trainer Chris Waller’s plan to have a higher profile at the Magic Millions carnival kicks off when Colosimo runs at the Gold Coast.

Colosimo will take on a talented field in the Three-Year-Old Handicap (1100m), a race which holds much interest at Saturday’s metropolitan standard meeting.

The filly is the first horse owned by the large Aquis Farm operation to be trained by Waller.

A $55,000 Magic Millions yearling, Colosimo has been beaten out of the place at her past two starts in Sydney.

But she showed plenty of ability early in her career when trained by Steve O’Dea, winning on debut at the Gold Coast and scoring at Eagle Farm at her next start.

Colosimo was one of the early favourites for the Magic Millions Classic but was sent for a spell after finishing ninth in the Group Three Bruce McLachlan Stakes on New Year’s Eve.

She won two trials in Sydney but finished fifth in two race starts.

Waller decided to send her to his Gold Coast stable with the idea of working her way through the grades heading towards the Magic Millions carnival.

Waller’s Queensland foreman Paul Shailer said the trainer had made it clear he wanted to target races at the Magic Millions carnival.

“It is just a matter of getting the recipe right,” Shailer said.

“Colosimo has settled in well in the warmer weather up here and Saturday will be a good test.”
