Conners’ homebred hope for Canonbury

Clarry Conners is renowned for his ability to train precocious two-year-olds.

He just might be adept at breeding them as well.

At Warwick Farm on Saturday, Conners will saddle up debutant Stylish Lad in the Listed Canonbury Stakes (1100m).

By Olympus, who Conners part-owned and trained and who he also maintains an interest in at stud, Stylish Lad was bred by the four-time Golden Slipper-winning trainer.

Olympus showed ability as a youngster and was stakes-placed in the old Illawarra Classic at Kembla Grange in 2003, although a couple of mishaps hindered his career.

“He won his second race at Rosehill and broke the race record and they were talking about him being an early favourite for the Slipper,” Conners said of Olympus.

“Then he got hurt. He got away from an attendant one day here (at Warwick Farm) and fell over and went through the fence.

“Another day he was at one of the owners’ properties and got a bit of electric wire caught in his mouth. He pulled back and tied himself down with the electric wire.”

Hopefully Stylish Lad will prove less accident-prone.

The youngster, a half-brother to stablemate and city winner Our Mosstique, was third to Canonbury rival Nediym’s Quest in a recent barrier trial.

Conners isn’t expecting him to trouble $1.35 race favourite and early Golden Slipper elect Raceway, but he is hoping Stylish Lad can acquit himself well.

“I’ve thrown him in the deep end, I know,” Conners said.

“But I’ve got to get him racing.

“It’s his home track. I’m not thinking he’s going to beat the favourites. I just want him to run a nice race and then see where I head with him.”

Conners also has fillies Debelle and Blue Ruby in the Group Two Light Fingers Stakes (1200m).

Both have good draws in the bumper field of 16 plus two emergencies with Debelle in five and Blue Ruby barrier eight.

To Conners, that means one thing.

“That’s because it’s raining and the fence is off,” he said.

“I only draw good barriers when the fence is off.”

Both are rated only rough chances with Blue Ruby at $81 and Debelle $41 but Conners is particularly upbeat about the prospects of Debelle.

“I think she’ll run a mighty race,” Conners said.

“She had a trial last week and she’s jumping out of her skin.

“She races very well fresh that filly.”
