The Coolmore Stud Stakes is always a fascinating contest, and some of the country’s best three-year-old sprinters will blast down the Flemington straight on Saturday afternoon.
For decades, the Coolmore Stud Stakes has figured as a key stallion-making race, and with names like Home Affairs, Exceedance, Merchant Navy, Flying Artie, Brazen Beau and Zoustar all featuring on the recent honour roll, that is still well and truly the case.
Who joins that illustrious list this week? Read on to my 2023 Coolmore Stud Stakes Tips to find all of my thoughts.
Suggested Bets
- 3 Units straight out #2 Cylinder
- 1 Unit E/W #17 Tiz Invincible
- Boxed Trifecta of the selections below
Coolmore Stud Stakes – Winner
Cylinder has been knocking on the door of a Group 1 win since debuting, and he is a fitting early favourite in 2023 Coolmore Stud Stakes betting.
Having won a couple of nice races before ending his autumn prep second in the Golden Slipper, the Exceed And Excel colt won each of his first two back this time as well, before filling the minors in the Golden Slipper.
He was last seen finishing fifth, beaten just over a length in The Everest, and a repeat of that performance in this company would see him winning.
Suggested Bet: No. 2 Cylinder
Coolmore Stud Stakes – 2nd
I’m holding firm with one that I identified as a really nice Coolmore Stud Stakes type at the beginning of the spring; Tiz Invincible.
Tiz Invincible made just two appearances at the races during her two-year-old season, and while not winning a race, she performed very well in a couple of black type features.
Having returned to knock off some nice sprinters in the Rosebud in August, the I Am Invincible filly followed up that performance with consecutive wins in the Furious Stakes and the Tea Rose, and she has bene freshened since finishing sixth behind Tropical Squall in the Flight Stakes.
To me, she has consistently looked like an excellent sprinter this time, and I thought that the 1600m of the Flight Stakes might just prove a little too long.
I thought that the $15 about her in Coolmore Stud Stakes betting was overs, and I’m keen to have something on each way.
Suggested Bet: No. 17 Tiz Invincible
Coolmore Stud Stakes – 3rd
I’m also really keen to see Steparty back to a sprint trip in the Coolmore Stud Stakes.
Steparty debuted for a smart win in maiden company at Ballarat in May, and just continued to improve with each start and as the bar was raised, culminating in consecutive wins in the McKenzie Stakes and the Neds Caulfield Guineas Prelude first and second up this time.
I thought that he was good, though well beaten when third in the Neds Caulfield Guineas three weeks ago, but he might just be another one that is a far more effective sprinter, than a miler.
Suggested Bet: No. 6 Steparty
Coolmore Stud Stakes – 4th
He suffered the first defeat of his career at his most recent appearance, but Ozzmosis steps out this week in peak order, and I think that he can fight out the finish of the Coolmore Stud Stakes.
The Zoustar colt returned a winner in the Heritage Stakes at Rosehill in September, the third appearance and win of his career, and it’s fair to say that King’s Gambit did comfortably lower his colours last time.
With further improvement this week, this horse has always suggested he’s up to Group 1 company.
Suggested Bet: No. 11 Ozzmosis
