COVID and horse racing to stay

Racing Victoria and the Victorian Jockeys’ Association will look at ways to overcome the chaos created by COVID that saw jockeys stood down from riding on Boxing Day.

Jockeys were forced to miss riding at Caulfield and Geelong on Sunday after being potentially exposed to COVID at the funeral of Chris Caserta last Monday or at a function on Thursday night.

Three jockeys have tested positive to COVID and are undertaking 10 days isolation while other jockeys have tested negative but require another test to resume riding at Yarra Valley on Tuesday.

VJA Chief Executive Matt Hyland said discussions had begun on how the industry will manage a similar scenario in the future.

“We do know that we are not going to avoid it,” Hyland told RSN.

“If you have the 15 or 16 riders at Caulfield that have had no exposure and you throw half-a-dozen riders in that may be negative today and have had some exposure, how do you manage that.

“There is no perfect script for it.”

Chloe Azzopardi, Laura Lafferty, Celine Gaudray, Ethan Brown, Fred Kersley, Matthew Cartwright, Damian Lane, Jordan Childs, Zac Spain, Michael Dee and Damien Thornton were all removed from their mounts at Caulfield.

To further complicate matters, Tahlia Hope and Damien Oliver were later stood down from riding after suffering injuries during the meeting.

Hyland said the time of year with extra meetings had exacerbated Sunday’s problem but added he does not know if the industry can keep restricting people if they provide a negative test.

“A lot of those riders would not have been able to go to trackwork this morning which puts extra pressure on the trainers to get their horses worked,” Hyland said.

“On one hand you want to protect the industry and protect everyone in the workplace and on the other hand this virus is not going anywhere.”
