Creedence chasing a Melbourne Cup spot in The Bart Cummings

Matt Cumani is trying to view The Bart Cummings as just another race for his emerging stayer Creedence and shut out what it will mean if he wins.

The horse can secure a start in the Melbourne Cup 2020 with success in The Bart Cummings, the victor earning a golden ticket into Australia’s most famous race.

“I’m trying not to think about it. If he won it would be a dream come true to get him into the Melbourne Cup,” Cumani said.

“Regardless of what’s at stake, this is the right race at the right time for him.

“He’s up in grade and it’s going to be a challenge but his form warrants a start in the race and he’s got to be a chance.”

Creedence has had four runs for Cumani for three wins, including at his past two starts at Flemington and Moonee Valley.

“I love the horse. He’s been a star for us,” Cumani said.

“I think the increase in distance will suit, and he’s run well over it before, but this will be the first time Michael Poy can’t use his claim on him.”

Creedence is number 75 in the Melbourne Cup order of entry and stablemate Future Score is number 85.

Cumain’s latest stable addition, northern hemisphere stayer San Huberto, is closer to gaining a berth at 31st on the list.

The Ballarat trainer said he would continue to do his best to secure his trio 2020 Melbourne Cup starts.

“That would be a super dream to get them all into the Melbourne Cup,” he said.
