Dan Excel tops Caulfield Cup 2014 ballot order

The Makybe Diva Stakes at Flemington is important in more ways than one for a couple of highly fancied Caulfield Cup hopefuls.

The winner of Saturday’s Group One race gains a certain start in next month’s Caulfield Cup with Sertorius and Spillway 26th and 40th respectively in the order of entry released on Friday.

Spillway is on the second line of Caulfield Cup betting at $13 while Sertorius is a $31 chance.

Hong Kong star Dan Excel, who has 57kg in the Cup, is exempt from the ballot courtesy of his win in the Singapore International Airlines Cup in May.

Talented New Zealand mare Silent Achiever, winner of two Group One races during the Sydney autumn, is second in the order of entry ahead of leading Japanese entrant Admire Rakti and the Lloyd Williams-owned Fawkner, winner of the race last year.

As part of new conditions introduced this year by the Melbourne Racing Club, horses will be ranked in order of their handicap below the race’s benchmark weight and then in order of their peak international rating achieved in any Group or Listed race run since October 18th, 2013.

The trio filling positions two to four are all 3kg below the Cups benchmark weight, but Silent Achiever has the highest international rating of 121 so she secures a start before Admire Rakti (117) and Fawkner (114).

Bande, the second of the Japanese entrants, is all but assured a start at No.14 as are fellow internationally trained stayers Red Cadeaux (fifth), 2013 runner-up Dandino (eighth) and Ambivalent (equal 15th).

The Group Three Kingston Town Stakes (2000m) at Rosehill on Saturday also provides horses such as Mr O’Ceirin (equal 36th), La Amistad (equal 44th) and Greatwood (equal 76th) an opportunity to climb the elimination order.

The Group Three Metric Mile at Awapanui in New Zealand gives 2011 Victoria Derby winner Sangster (89th) the chance to pass the ballot with a top-three finish and rise more than 40 places. Also contesting the race is New Zealand Derby winner Puccini who is equal 15th in the order of entry.
