Dunaden still the Melbourne Cup 2012 favourite after 1kg penalty

Despite getting an additional one kilogram penalty, French super stayer Dunaden remains the $6.00 favourite with online bookmaker sportsbet for 2012 Melbourne Cup, but like last year’s result, Red Cadeaux is closing in quick smart.

Dunaden held out Red Cadeaux by the smallest of margins to win the 2011 Melbourne Cup, but meets the English stayer 2.5 kilograms worse off after his mesmerising win in Saturday’s Caulfield Cup.

Money continues to come for Dunaden, but since Saturday Red Cadeaux has firmed from $21 into $12.

“Punters have identified the weight advantage Dunaden is giving Red Cadeaux and more and more of them are backing Ed Dunlop’s runner to go one better this time around,” said sportsbet.com.au’s Ben Hawes.

“Dunaden has to lug 4.5 kilos more than last year which is a massive ask, and while support for Red Cadeaux is growing, plenty of punters think Dunaden is more than good enough to go back-to-back.”

Following Dunaden in betting is Mount Athos (steady $9.00), Americain ($8.00 out to $9.00) and Brigantin ($15 into $11).

Other notable moves in the market include, Green Moon tightening from $13 into $11, Lights Of Heaven firming from $17 into $15 and Glencadam Gold continuing to drift, firstly from $10 to $34 before getting out to $41.
