Expensive filly Eclair Sunrise scores maiden win at Ballarat

Eclair Sunrise, a $480,000 Fastnet Rock yearling purchase, has broken through for her maiden win in a two-year-old race at Ballarat.

The rank outsider in a field of five two-year-olds has lived up to her hefty purchase price with an all-the-way victory at Ballarat.

The Dan O’Sullivan-trained Eclair Sunrise did not let her connections down at her second race start in taking out the Cervus Equipment Handicap (1200m) on Wednesday.

A $480,000 yearling purchase, Eclair Sunrise was sent out a $10 chance under Will Price before defeating Vancity ($8) by 1-¾ lengths with the $2.25 favourite Crazy Ladies, three-quarters-of-a-length away third.

O’Sullivan said he cannot control the price Eclair Sunrise was sent out but was confident the daughter of Fastnet Rock would run well on Wednesday.

On debut in February, Eclair Sunrise finished last, 11 lengths from the winner at Ballarat.

“At her first start here, she just didn’t switch on, even in the mounting yard,” O’Sullivan said.

“She went around like she had no idea and raced accordingly so we gave her a short 10-day break and then brought her back into work.

“Both her jump-outs this time in have been terrific. She trialled at Camperdown on the heavy and then here on the synthetic last Thursday and she trialled like she raced did today, led and controlled it.

“So, it was no surprise to us.”

With the maiden win under the belt, O’Sullivan said with the filly’s breeding and price tag, ideally he would like to try and find a city race for Eclair Sunrise.

“She handles the synthetic, she hands a wet track,” O’Sullivan said.

“It’s the right time of year to keep going and find something different.

“With a pedigree like hers, it would be nice to find something in town, but we won’t get too carried away yet, we’ll take baby steps.”
