Fontelina stakes Guineas claims

Fontelina added his name to Anthony Cummings’ Australian Guineas prospects when he beat a field of older horses at Rosehill on Saturday.

The gelding will join stablemates Strike The Stars and Upbeat, winner of Saturday’s Autumn Classic at Caulfield, in next Saturday’s Group One feature.

“He’s booked to go south with Strike The Stars on Sunday night,” Cummings’ foreman Barry Smith said.

“He continues to improve and as long as he pulls up OK he will be there.”

The $3.70 favourite in the Bar 100 Hcp (1400m), Fontelina raced in the front half of the field and pulled away in the straight.

He held off Romanus ($7) by a length with Zedlion ($20) another 1-1/4 lengths third.

Cummings will be looking for a new jockey for Fontelina in the Guineas with Peter Robl to ride in Sydney where he has a full book on Silver Slipper day.

Upbeat won the Group Two Autumn Classic (1800m) on a seven-day back-up from his fourth at Warwick Farm to give Blake Shinn a welcome big-race win.

Both Shinn and Robl spent 12 months on the sidelines for betting offences and both have made successful comebacks in the past few months.

Robl claimed a double at Rosehill, winning the two-year-old race on the program aboard the Clarry Conners-trained Dear Demi.
