Freedman stablemates to clash in Regal Roller Stakes 2022

Anthony and Sam Freedman are confident Sinawann is a weight-for-age galloper in the making and hope to take that approach into the Melbourne Spring Carnival.

After the imported galloper’s autumn campaign was derailed courtesy of a suspensory niggle, Sinawann is set to make his return in the Listed Regal Roller Stakes (1200m) at Caulfield on Saturday where he will be joined by stablemate Open Minded.

Sinawann has not raced since finishing eighth to Tofane in the Group 1 C F Orr Stakes (1400m) at Caulfield in February, but Brad Taylor, racing manager for the Freedman father-and-son training partnership, said the entire was well forward for his first-up run.

“He came back into work and had a few weeks at the water walker and then they tipped him back out again, just because he was too early for everything,” Taylor said.

“So, this was the plan. Get him to this race and if he runs well, he’ll have a crack at the Memsie Stakes.”

If Sinawann performs well in the Group 1 Memsie Stakes (1400m) at Caulfield on August 27, the six-year-old is likely to follow a weight-for-age program into the spring.

However, if he does not, then the Group 1 Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes (1400m) on September 17 and the Group 1 Toorak Handicap (1600m) could become options.

“He’s got form over 1800 metres in Europe, but whether he gets that far here, we’re not sure, so we may keep him to those 1400-metre, mile trips,” Taylor said.

“Anthony and Sam are of the opinion he is a weight-for-age galloper with what he has shown us.”

Open Minded will have his first run since finishing second-last in the Group 3 Carlyon Cup (1600m) at Caulfield in February which followed successive wins at the track over 1400m the previous month.

Taylor said Open Minded has had three jump-outs in preparation for his return and was being aimed at the Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes.

“Hopefully he will get in with a lightweight,” Taylor said.

“He’s got a good record over 1200 metres and he’s forward enough to run a good race on Saturday.”.
