Newmarket Handicap and Williams Reid Stakes options for Generation

The Ciaron Maher and David Eustace stable is considering Group 1 possibilities for Generation after his return win at Caulfield.

Registering his fourth win in his six-start career, Generation returned from a spell to claim the Group 3 Manfred Stakes (1200m) on Saturday.

It was the first start for Generation since taking out the Group 3 Red Anchor Stakes (1200m) at The Valley last October.

Last year’s Manfred Stakes winner Portland Sky had also won the Red Anchor Stakes before going on to share honours with Celebrity Queen in the Group 1 Oakleigh Plate (1100m) three weeks later.

However, Maher and Eustace are likely to resist the temptation of running Generation in this year’s Oakleigh Plate at Caulfield on February 26, preferring the 1200m of the Group 3 Zeditave Stakes that day.

Eustace said Group 1 options later in the autumn may include the Newmarket Handicap (1200m) on March 12 and the Williams Reid Stakes (1200m) at The Valley on March 25.

Giving Jye Mcneil his fourth straight winner of the afternoon, Generation, the $1.85 favourite, scored a three-quarter length win from Zethus ($21) with Linas Legend ($6) a further 1-¾ lengths away third.

Maher and Eustace have Marabi, currently the $2.40 favourite for the Oakleigh Plate, aimed at the race while Generation is rated an $18 chance with TAB.

“We probably won’t go to the Oakleigh Plate,” Eustace said.

“Not because of her, but we don’t think he’s an 1100-metre horse. He’s not quite sharp enough.

“The Zeditave is back here which we’d have to consider, and the Newmarket warrants consideration as well, down in the weights and a bit later something like the William Reid but he’d have to win another race before going to races like that.

“He’s a colt, there’s a bit of improvement there but Jye got it spot on.

“He let him travel deep into the straight and when he asked him to quicken, he quickened well.

“He’s building a good record now and he’s done very little wrong.”
